Cannot believe it??!

How did we already get into 2011 and how is it almost the end of February? Time truly flies. The season has brought up over three feet of snow and today 60 degree weather. Of course there is already snow in the forecast. New England weather is never trustworthy. However, in the months away great cakes were created!!

Enjoy!

And there were baby clothes!

So, yes, it was over a week ago that we finished and dropped off the cake, but things have been busy! As I hope you all have seen our website...www.sweetbabycakesonline.com! It was so much fun to put together and I hope that you all like it.

Now for the cake...it was an experience that was excellent. Sister and I started the cake on Friday. We made the cakes on Friday and let them sit overnight. Then on Saturday we iced, filled and decorated them. In addition to doing all those things we had to make sure that the baby was fed, happy and playing nicely.

In the end it was a great time and we made it to bed by 10pm on Saturday night! Perfecto! Check it out...

Oh and we had extra time and supplies so sister made a birthday cake for her friend...yummy!

Attempt Numbero Dos!

Yesterday was not fun...why? Well, I started to make my list for my second assignment of the summer: a baby shower cake! It is very exciting that I am making my first three tiered cake. In the end it will probably be way too much cake for the shower but who doesn't love extra cake to eat forever. And really, flour and sugar is not that much money. So yesterday was day one of the prep work for the cake. I was to make ALL of the decorations for the cake. It is a three tiered cake that I found online that we are trying to recreate. The decorations I am making are all made out of gum paste. So, the fondant needed to be colored and then mixed with some gum tex to get it to be the right texture.

Well...baby boy did not want to nap in the afternoon until 5:25pm! That's right so not much got done yesterday. Then the hubby wanted me to head to bed with him around 10ish...get your minds out of the gutter we went right to bed after hubby shed some light on me with some useless tips from a book my mother bought him.

So up to today I had only made the 120 buttons I needed. At least I think that is how many I made. We shall see when we start to decorate on Saturday. Today, as the nap is about to finish (the monitor is right next to be and the baby is starting to cry), I was able to make all 100 of the cookie cutter images for the clothes line! WooHoooo!!!

The rest of today needs to be done with making the frosting, roughly 23 cups worth and some pastry cream!

Yumm...

Happy Birthday to you...Happy Birthday to you!

Happy Birthday Mom! As I am late posting pics of our birthday celebration. It was a tricky weekend as there were probably more lows than highs with the passing of my uncle, but we were still able to get together for a celebration for my mother's birthday. And of course it was her first birthday as a Nana!

The plan was to meet at this new restaurant in Hingham...Alma Nova I believe..run by a New Kids on the Block Brother. My sister wanted to wear our old NKOTB buttons and such. However, when I called to make a reservation 9:30pm was the earliest! Off the list! On to the Fours we went. It was a nice gather of my mothers friends, myself, the hubby, the baby and my sister. A six inch cake was perfect. Lemon was going to be the perfect tasting too!

Mother was surprise with the cake and with her friends coming. All in all it was a lovely celebration! And the cake was yummy!!!! Lemon butter cake with lemon curd filling frost with a Swiss merg butter cream. Decorated with crystallized lemons!

T-100 days!

The count down is on! Via Facebook I have learned that it is is 100 days till our dear friends wed and I provide the cake!! 100 days to go till 10/2/10! Cannot wait for the party of the year! So much fun to be had. What a great way to start it off by this week having the first official cake tasting. The girls and I headed over to the couples new home for a lovely dinner. It was a great way to start of the wedding season as the bride just had her first shower so she was able to wine and dine us! A great time.

And...to top it all of it was her birthday the day before so it was perfect for the tasting! Here is what I did. I made three six inch cakes. A white butte, yellow and devil food cake! They were then filled the following:

White Butter - strawberry and cream
Yelllow Cake - raspberry and cream on one layer then buttercream on the other
Devil Food Cake - raspberry and chocolate on one half and italian merq. on the other

All were iced with a swiss buttercream!

So Yummy! And the finally decision was....the white butter cake with strawberry and cream. It was the best one by far! The cake is to serve about 200ish people with the couple keeping the top tier for their first anniversary. The top tier, as it needs to be frozen, really should not have fruit in it, so that one will probably be chocolate butter cake with buttercream filling...YUM!

I hope by then I can have dairy! :)

See the pics of the night! Also, it was so fun coming up with the fillings and making the cakes for us to taste. Cannot wait for the next one. Less than a month till the baby shower cake!!!

Double the babies...Double the fun!

And so it was a year ago on Wednesday that they family welcomed two new little babies to it! It was double the babies. Bless their mother for carrying them around for 9 months - a total of about 14 lbs of baby - and letting us get to know those two little boys! They were tiny little newborns a year ago and now they are little boys. And for sweetbabycakes that meant cakes for two babies! It was double fun!!!

I was so honored to make these cakes for their first birthday. Not only was it fun, but it was my first real assignment! It was great. My partner in crime in my cake world, sister, was down in DC for a wedding so she was unable to help. Therefore, my mother graciously offered to head north (about 50 minute drive) to help. She was a great help with baking the cakes and helping with my little baby. Gosh, who will be a year in 3 1/2 months. I don't want to think about it yet. Yikes! Anyways, on Friday we baked all the cakes - 2 8 inch x 3 inch rounds and 2 sheet cakes. Each were one chocolate and one vanilla. Yes, there was WAY TOO MUCH CAKE!

We then were able to make a marvelous butter cream frosting via Martha Stewart's wedding cake book to fill the sheet cakes (they were stacked) and the vanilla cake. My the time this was all done and we feed and cared for the baby it was time for mother to head back south. Good luck with that Cape traffic! Once hubby got home I was able to finish the vanilla cake, which in turned ended up being Jack's cake and I also crumb coated my squares of the sheet cake. Now, I decided to make blocks by cutting out blocks from the sheet cake. What I learned from this - chill then coat! It was the most difficult part of the whole process. On Friday I was up until about 12ish working on the cakes and then jumped out of bed at 630am to start again.

I know this is crazy, but when you have to also take care of your own baby and make time to spend with the hubby it is worth it. So, up at 630am I started making the dots of the blue (chocolate) cake, which was Noah's. It was very easy and enjoyable. This was done with royal icing. All of the decorations on the cake were done with royal icing. At 7 I had to run out to get more eggs, sugar and butter for more frosting. I got home, feed and changed the babe and then made more frosting. The rest was cake!!

Sunday, after working all night at the hospital and a few hours of sleep, I just had to stack the blocks and we were off!!!

It was a great party and a perfect first assignment!!! Can't wait for the next ones!

Ps...note the adult beverages in one pic...def had a few on Friday!!! Yummy! Needed something to get thru it!
